THERE WAS A POPULAR sitcom in the late 70s to early 80s called Three’s Company. We used the theme music to inspire a weekly feature on the show called Three’s Company Thursday. I always felt really uncomfortable with this feature and was surprised to get any calls for it, but every week we did and every week people tuned in especially to listen. The feature was so popular among our listeners that we even had t-shirts made up promoting it.

Basically, we would ask listeners to call in and tell us about a threesome they had. Yep, that was it. Share with us the dirty details of your ménage à trois so the rest of us voyeurs can live vicariously through you.

The caller would tell their story on the air, then we would pick a jury of three other listeners to decide if the caller was telling the truth or lying. If the jury agreed on truth, the caller won a prize. No one ever really called in to win a prize, though, they just wanted to brag.

I was often surprised by how many people would willingly go on national radio to share their intimate threesome experience. We offered to change their names, but most were actually proud to contribute. Not everyone had the courage to confess once they got on air, though. Like Joan from Nelson, for instance.

‘Oh God, I can’t . . .’ she said, nervously giggling. If I was to judge her by her voice, I’d say she sounded like she was in her forties and was quite a sensible woman with a sensible job who lived in a sensible house. I was wrong, though.

Joan told us she wanted to back out, but Dom wasn’t keen to lose a story.

‘Joan, I’m just curious. Before you back out . . . you’re 28 years old, how long ago did this happen?’

‘Um, I was 20,’ she replied.

‘So, you’re married now? You have kids?’ Dom pressed on.

‘Yes,’ she said hurriedly, ‘and they’re coming in!’

We let Joan go, so we will never know the details of her mischievous three-way fling!
